IS MOB JUSTICE JUSTIFIED?

mob justice khayalitsha

Crime is unbearable all over South Africa, but it is even worse in the slums or squatter camps where rape, robbery and murder are the highest. In other communities, there are even some other form of security measures in place, for instance, community policing forums. A lot has been said about what we should do or not do in order to lessen chances of being victims of crimes. But all those tips prove futile when ever criminals pounce on us, rattle our homes and leave us all shuddering with fear or seething with anger, for the rest of our lives.

PORTFOLIO LIFE, MONEY, PRIORITIES AND THOSE BLOODY JONES’

875cb6fb0460bc73d7d46af0d1878551

"In judging our progress as individuals we tend to focus on external factors such as one's social position, influence and popularity, wealth and standard of education... but internal factors may be even more crucial in assessing one's development as a human being: honesty, sincerity, simplicity, humility, purity, generosity, absence of vanity, readiness to serve your fellow men -- qualities within the reach of every soul and the foundation of spiritual life."Nelson Mandela

Someone recently recognised me at a party and said "Hey aren't you the guy I saw in that advert?" When I confirmed the suspicion, another person then asked me whether I am now an actor. Before I could respond, a relative butted in saying that I am more of a TV presenter – 'Check him out on DSTV Channel 190' she beamed. In certain circles, people refer to me as a magazine editor while you could catch me on a Tuesday wearing a tight suit-matching tie accompanied by a calculator effectively fulfilling the role of an accountant. I frequently act as MC at friend's weddings or at big occasions like the Kenyan President's Joburg visit. And most recently, I have been on TV and radio giving interviews as the founder and project manager for the inaugural South African Professional Services Awards.

Africans don’t read, do they?

sowetanI will risk being called a nitpicker stuck in the grime of the past and bravely say, Afrikaans literature's success was made possible mainly by apartheid means. And today, publishing houses and several bookshops are still ensuring that Afrikaans literature remains available for its readers. And if the same could have been done for one of our indigenous languages, the same results could have been easily realized.

BLACK GUY ALWAYS BUTT OF JOKE IN SA ADS

I recently watched a KFC Ad from Australia which sparked debate as to its racist nature. It was discussed on the Young Turks platform where one of the commentators rules it is racist by breaking it down as follows: This white guy is sitting in his own seat, he is trying to watch a game while all these black people are behaving uncivilised. He asks "want a way out of a sticky situation?" - gives them chicken to behave themselves then announces - "too easy!"

10 THINGS I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD DO AS A FATHER

6a0133f30ae399970b01910252e8e0970c-800wi

My wife gave birth two and a half months ago to our first child and his ten week anniversary had me thinking about ten things that I do now that I never thought I would do even when I became a father.
1. KISSING ON THE MOUTH
Growing up, kissing on the mouth was something that you rarely saw in public. When I moved to South Africa, I found it somewhat strange that when two couples would meet, a man would plant his lips on his pal's wife to say hello. Thirty year old men receive quick lipstick kisses from their grandmothers in local culture. So kissing my son on my mouth was something I would previously have dismissed as incestuously gay and yet he is so adorable the occasional smack on the mouth just happens naturally.

NICE GIRLS DON'T GET THE CORNER OFFICE

nicegirlsBeing a woman is not easy. I'm not comparing it to being a man because I'm not a man and don't really understand a man's struggle. I'm simply saying that being a woman is not easy.

I've always heard older women say it and maybe have said it before without really understanding it when I was younger. But right now, as I type this, and you read it – I feel the struggle that is being a woman, especially in the career aspect of my life.

AFRICANS - DON'T GET RICH, GET WEALTHY!

download"I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to be rich or how to be poor..." ~ Neil Gaiman, The Sandman, Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones
There was a time when I was absolutely crazy about stand-up comedy. I was forever looking for new material to watch. Nowadays my interest has waned but I am still surprised by how many truths were buried under all the jokes I listened to. Some of them are still a pertinent part of my approach to life today. Before you say it....I know its a bit crazy to get life lessons from comedians but hear me out. Sometimes inspiration comes from the strangest places.

Power is like being a lady (or man)...if you have to tell people you are, you aren't – Margaret Thatcher
On the third of Feb 2014, God blessed my wife and I with a bouncing baby boy. I was not shy about posting pictures on Facebook one of which received an overwhelming 759 likes. A flood of congratulations followed, inbox messages, smses, whatsapp groups and quite a few local and international phone calls.
One particular friend who is a father to a couple of daughters asked me "Dude how did you manage to get a boy on your first attempt?"

A LETTER TO SELF REVEALING HOW AN AFRIKAANS MAN AND HIS ZIMBABWEAN LADY COLLEAGUE FORM AN UNUSUAL FRIENDSHIP WITH TRYING TIMES...

“Enclose your heart in times of need with the steel of your determination and your strength. In doing this, all things will be bearable.” ~Lora Leigh,     Broken Wings

Dear Chuwe,

It’s not often that one receives a letter from me. I decided to write to you so I could help you process what is happening. I can see you are battling to comprehend how I work. It may not seem like anyone knows at times, but I do. All the time.

LUPITA ON KIMMEL'S SHOW: WHY ARE WE SO TAKEN BY THE WEST?

1557431 578231545592083 1199214312 n

Spurred by Jimmy Kimmel's silly questions (in my opinion) recently on his show while interviewing the impressive Miss Lupita Nyong'o (who is making all sorts of waves in Hollywood at the moment and successfully dispensing some much appreciated dose of national pride), I will take this opportunity to share my thoughts.
